“I have experienced such generosity in my own career, and like many artists I’m passionate about giving back. Creating an initiative where we are collectively uniting to share the stage with our younger colleagues, now and in the future, has long-term benefits for all.”
“Momentum is a fantastic initiative and I support it with all my strength! The new generations of musicians need to be supported in these difficult times because simply, they are our future, and we need a better future! Let’s take good care of them, let’s all support Momentum!”
“It’s an honour to share the stage with talented young singers in these very challenging times.”
“All the musicians of my generation were given so much moral support and important advice by our older colleagues. So many of these wise phrases could be life changing if you knew how to pay attention. But in a crisis like this, young musicians need more, and need it quickly and desperately. The opportunities invented in this wonderful scheme will hopefully be even more transformative and will provide a bridge over troubled waters for many magnificently gifted young artists. I’m thrilled to be part of it.”
“Barbara Hannigan’s initiative will, I have no doubt, give many talented young performers a real start. Everyone needs MOMENTUM in their lives and careers! We must all do what we can to support the next generation.”
“I can think of no better way to nurture the enormous musical talent that is facing such a threat in the face of this pandemic. I dearly hope that performers, promoters and audiences alike become used to the idea that opportunities to make music can be shared rather than competed for. We need to help each other now more than ever.”
“> I am incredibly honoured to be involved in Barbara Hannigan’s brainchild Momentum. It works. I reiterate, it truly does work to actively nurture and mentor young musicians on the professional platform. And most importantly, the audience truly understand and appreciate it. Fantastic concept, I only wish I had thought of it, and yet, i can undoubtedly be a part of it.”
“It is a great privilege to join the Momentum initiative as both principal and guest artist; the pianist Joseph Middleton invited me as a young artist for a performance and CD recording project in February, and then in April I had the chance to pay it forward by inviting a Momentum collaborator, cellist Ashok Klouda, to join me as principal artist--again with fabulous collaborator Joseph Middleton as part of Leeds Lieder. Our industry has taken a huge hit, so we have the responsibility to support each other whenever we can! There will be more opportunities for all of us later if we are generous with our platforms now.”
“This is exactly how I got MY start, when Sir Simon Rattle gave me my first professional conducting opportunity.”
“I’m thrilled to support this excellent initiative providing support and opportunity to tomorrow’s brightest musicians. It can be disorientating and difficult starting out, and this initiative will help enormously. I can’t wait to see and hear all the new young talent!”
“Yuriy Yurchuk is an outstanding baritone who was a distinguished member of our ROH Jette Parker Young Artists Programme and I am delighted to have the opportunity to present him in this exciting new initiative, Momentum. It is vital that we all look to support the next generation of performing talent, not least at this difficult time”
“I am happy, proud and inspired to be part of Momentum: In these times of crisis we all as society have the responsibility to keep the performing arts alive, it is an essential part of the soul of our human community. And we, the experienced artists, have to be in the front line of that fight in order to help the younger musicians to flourish and develop. Art and music will always go on. We, the artists, do care.“
“Musicians supporting musicians shows the strength of our community and a bond across borders and generations that can spark hope in testing times.”
I really love the wonderful initiative called Momentum and am truly privileged to participate. In the difficult time of COVID-connected limitations our musical culture has been struggling with, the talented young artists suffer most. This is an amazing opportunity to support them meaningfully and enable them to learn. We will learn from them. The dialogue between all generations must not cease.
“I wholeheartedly add my name to the movement that is Momentum. It would be my honour to support the unbelievable young singers currently trying to start careers at such a difficult time.”
“Coming from a small beautiful city in the south of Spain was not the straightest way to start conducting. But on my path and conviction to learn, I met great and generous artists who helped me. It was the most inspirational and powerful way of finding out how to go on, how to continue in the most genuine way, developing my own path of learning. Ever since, I’m committed to the young generations of artists, always looking for the dialogue and common inspiration. And we need each other more than ever!”
“I was so touched to be invited by Roderick Williams to share his recital at the Snape Maltings as part of the brilliant Momentum Scheme. It was a wonderful opportunity to sing with a live audience for the first time in many months, and watching Roddy was an absolute masterclass for me. Momentum is such a fantastic idea and has been such a life line during this terrible year for freelance artists. I count myself incredibly lucky to have been one of the many beneficiaries.”

“I felt a huge mix of emotions to have been asked by Malcolm Martineau and Momentum to be a part of this fantastic initiative. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to sing, to learn, and to collaborate after such an isolating and challenging year for so many of us.
It is humbling to be a part of such an outpouring of collective support to young artists which has such strength of feeling, humanity and ambition. Momentum is exactly what the performing world needs both now and in the future too.”
“Yes, some artists are already doing this, but to be part of a collective initiative, it’s not just an honour, it’s a necessity.”
"It takes trust and faith to bring in an unknown young conductor to a professional orchestra, but the exact first step that opens the door hopefully budding a new relationship with the orchestra. This visibility step is often the hardest to obtain in the early stages of an artist's journey. For that, I am eternally grateful to Karina Cannellakis for guiding me into the MOMENTUM scheme and to Barbara Hannigan for initiating the chain reaction with vigor and passion. To me, MOMENTUM is a symbol of unity, empathy, strength, and HOPE."
“The past year has been an exceptionally difficult time for performers and the industry as a whole and I am truly thankful and grateful to have been a part of the Momentum scheme. Besides the financial help, it has also given me belief and has been very uplifting, allowing me to remain positive during these devastating times. I can’t thank Momentum and its mentors enough for their generous support - a truly amazing scheme. Diolch.”
““I was thrilled to be invited by Daniel Harding to conduct the renowned Swedish Radio Choir in concert in the Berdwaldhallen in Stockholm. As someone making the transition from professional choral singer to conductor, this was a wonderful opportunity. It was a privilege to lead these superb singers in performance, under Daniel’s careful guidance.”
“I feel incredibly honored to be a part of Barbara Hannigan’s important Momentum initiative. At this crucial juncture, we all need to work together to lift each other up, and I can think of no better way to channel our collective energy than to help our younger colleagues.”
“Momentum’s geniality comes from its basic, yet primordial principle: intergenerational exchange of knowledge and support. There are so many amazing young musicians, who are not just incredibly talented, but most importantly, ready and eager to engage with the reality of professional musical life. This little push, in such a world situation as of today, is just what is needed. Thank you, Barbara Hannigan, for believing in young musicians like me. Thank you for your outstanding vision and example! A whole generation of musicians will be always eternally grateful.”
“Young up-and-coming musicians are struggling: there are few concerts and possibilities to build a life as a performer.
I am very happy to join Barbara Hannigan`s admirable Momentum program, which I am sure will give a number of young talents some direction and hope for a better future.”
“Thank you so much to Louise Alder, Roger Vignoles, Wigmore Hall, Barbara Hannigan and everyone at Momentum for this incredible opportunity! Wigmore Hall has to be one of the best places in the world to sing, and it was such a joy to share the stage with Louise and Roger, all thanks to the ingenious initiative that is Momentum! In such difficult and trying times at the moment, it was truly special to be making music with world class professionals and sharing the stage with them. What fun to be Louise's husband for the briefest of moments, and it is all still available to stream online. Her balloon boobs may still be on the Wigmore Hall ceiling... Thank you Momentum!! You are making a huge difference to all young artists, at a time when we need it the most.”
